Oh wow, this is bringing a zing to my otherwise-bland January Monday morning. Thank you for that!

I’m curious about knowing more about the male goats. Is there a “job” for them, ie chewing up kudzu, being ogled by humans (although I suspect as they mature this might not work out)?

Perhaps a post about male goats?

Thanks!

Seconding this!!! Found all the stuff about male cows and that’s why we have veal fascinating. (Never had heard of rose veal before.)

And this is all very exciting and wonderful. Looking forward to more of your dispatches from the goat farm (and more goat photos of course).

Thanks for reading! It's also why we have rennet to make cheese in the first place (it comes from one of the stomachs of a young kid/lamb/calf). There's a lot of nuance that is often missed in these conversations, so I'm glad I'm able to shed some light!

I'm so glad! As you can imagine, running a no-kill dairy requires a lot of creative thinking in this vein. Some goats have gone on to be pets while others have gone on to work at grazing services, but because those animals are also sometimes processed for meat at the end of the season, Lauren is very choosy about who she rehomes animals with.

I love that you're doing this! I can't wait to follow along with your experiences. And also, I feel you on the pain of the LA fires. We lived in Eagle Rock until I was 9 and large chunks of my family are still in the greater LA area, with cars packed in case their neighborhood is evacuated. It is overwhelmingly awful.

It's so horrifying. We're counting ourselves lucky that we got grandma out a few years ago but my dad especially is mourning his childhood. So much of what was there 60-70 years ago, like the streets where he did his paper route, the deli where he'd eat roast beef sandwiches, and the pharmacy he made deliveries for as a teen were still there, and now they're just gone.

I’m going to live through this! Although I have sheep, milk a few each spring/summer and did work at a cow dairy for a few years—-despite all that… I never got my true fill with farm interning and dairying (can’t we be in our twenties for like 2 decades instead??!!) excited to follow along!!
